Winter teaches the body to hold. Shoulders creep up, the jaw tightens and our circulation slows. Spring is season of thaw, warmth returning and everything is sprouting. Your body is awakening again and you can assist it in blooming.
This five-minute self-massage is a gentle way to wake the tissues after winter using breath, slow touch, and a light spring oil blend. Do it in the morning to greet the day, or in the evening to release what you’ve been carrying.
Spring Oil Blend
In your palm, mix 1 tablespoon sweet almond or jojoba oil with 1–2 drops total of essential oils: lavender (soften), geranium (balance), sweet orange (uplift). Rub hands together to warm.
Step 1: Arrive (30 seconds)
Sit or stand comfortably. Place one hand on your chest and one on your belly. Inhale slowly through the nose for a count of four, exhale for a count of six. Repeat three breaths.
Step 2: Neck and Shoulders (2 minutes)
Apply oil to your hands. Gently squeeze the tops of your shoulders like kneading warm dough. Move from the outside of the shoulder toward the neck. Then use your fingertips to make slow circles at the base of the skull. If you find a tender spot, pause, soften your jaw, and breathe into it for two slow exhalations.
Step 3: Jaw and Face (1 minute)
Using light pressure, trace circles along the jawline from chin to ear. Slide up to the temples and circle there. Sweep down the sides of the face and let your mouth hang slightly open. Unclench without forcing.
Step 4: Hands and Forearms (1 minute)
Press your thumb into the center of your palm and circle outward. Gently pull each finger from base to tip. Then glide up your forearm with long strokes toward the heart. Switch sides.
Step 5: Seal It (30 seconds)
Rest your hands over your heart. One slow inhale, one long exhale. Notice warmth, opening up space and surrendering into ease.
